How to Know When You’re Talking to a True eCommerce SEO Expert

Hiring an eCommerce SEO expert is not inexpensive, and moreover it is a strategic decision the real fruits of which you may not see returning a lot for a year or so.

That makes it imperative to hire right the first time around for eCommerce SEO services. Part of that is being able to tell, yourself, if the person or team you’re talking with is a real expert.

But how can you tell? Well, these are some big signs the person you’re talking to is no stranger to SEO marketing strategies.

They Know the Limitations of AI
Artificial intelligence, or AI, has its use cases, to be true. It can help with keyword research (and general research), as well as with copy production, editing, proofreading, and even coding for your online store.

But AI is not a panacea. There are some “experts” who claim that using it to draft copy can produce stellar results in the search engine results pages. In the short term this may be feasible but in the long-term it is unlikely to do so and Google has already assigned penalties in recent months for low-quality copy.

Any true expert you talk to should remark on the same and not lean too heavily on AI.

They Don’t Promise Results for Your eCommerce Store
Anyone that promises results in organic marketing – SEO or otherwise – is blowing smoke. Good as you are, or can be, there’s no one that can guarantee results through any eCommerce SEO strategy.

This is a big red flag. The truth is, even the best of the experts only know so much about what Google actually does when assigning rankings, follow the trends, and capitalize on them.

It’s fine if they give you estimates. But promises? Keep looking if that happens.

They Belabor the Fact That It Takes a Long Time
When you invest in organic improvements to your website to boost its SEO value, it’s going to take a while. Usually, you don’t see results for about a year, and the best results in search engine optimizations take two to three years to really get along.

Most reputable SEO services providers will make it a point to bring that up and will drive it home. They don’t want you to hire them thinking you’ll see results in a month, and then cut them loose when that doesn’t happen. Both parties lose in that case.

They Can Show You Proof of Results
While an eCommerce SEO expert may not be able to give you the granular details of how the whole process works, they should be able to show you that they can, and in fact have, produced results for clients, specifically in terms of improving online visibility in the organic search results.

The best thing they can offer you in this case is a case study that contains data that shows how specific clients improved as a result of their efforts, either in terms of visibility, organic traffic, or conversions – or another goal, if there was one.

Either way, a case study that contains hard data is a big selling point.

They Don’t Encourage You to Target Very Competitive Keywords
A responsible SEO expert is not going to push you to target keywords that are too competitive, and thereby, effectively unattainable, especially not early on in the campaign, or if you have a website that has a low domain authority score.

Working with an eCommerce SEO Expert
As stated, it’s not particularly a cheap proposition to hire an eCommerce SEO expert, and so it pays dividends to do your research so you can be confident ahead of time that you’re hiring a partner that will be able to deliver.

Take the pointers in this short article to count and do some more research. SEO is not new as a marketing channel, by any means, and there are plenty of helpful resources out there to make sure you know enough to make a wise decision in hiring.
